General Essential Oil Guidelines

Essential oils are potent. A drop or two is enough to diffuse scents throughout a room. A drop or two of essential oil (per teaspoon of a carrier oil) is all that’s usually needed when using essential oils topically.

Using quality oils is important. Do your research and seek out a brand you can trust. Before you use essential oils, be sure to study them, their side effects, and their risks.

Source safe oils

The FDA doesn’t inspect or oversee the production and sale of essential oils. This means the quality is entirely up to the producers. That is why it’s important you seek out a brand you trust and feel confident using.

Keep your healthcare provider informed

It’s important that your healthcare provider knows that you’re using the oils. S/he may have other resources that can help. S/he can help you use essential oils safely by ensuring that the oils you choose won’t affect any medications you’re currently taking.

Beard Oil 101

Beard oils are becoming increasingly popular. They can change the look, texture, and health of one’s beard in a matter of seconds. The science behind beard oil is quite simple. Within a matter of days, even the best efforts to grow a beard can result in a dry, itchy, and disheveled mess. While it may seem like it’s the hair, the root cause of these problems is really the underlying skin and its sebaceous glands. Sebaceous glands are microscopic glands located at the root of each hair follicle. Their main function is to secrete an oily and waxy substance called sebum that keeps skin and hair moisturized. While the hair follicle becomes longer, the sebaceous glands do not grow nor do they have a means to increase sebum production. The longer the beard becomes, the greater the discomfort and risk for dry and unhealthy skin and hair. Beard oil is a simple solution to the discomforts of a beard.

Some beard oils may be fortified with vitamins or fragrances, but basically, beard oil is composed of two ingredients: a carrier oil, such as fractionated coconut oil (fco) and an essential oil (or a blend of them). The medium-chain triglycerides comprising fco are the ideal carrier for a beard oil. FCO blends well with other oils, is moisturizing, leaves hair and skin soft and smooth, and it is odorless—so you can better enjoy the pleasant aroma of the added essential oils.
